Help support The Museum of Fantasy Art by purchasing one of these cool items - Pulp Fiction. A cult film, or a cult movie, picture, or television show, is a cult classic. They are films that have accumulated a highly devoted following, from a specific group of fans. Often cult movies have failed to achieve fame outside of their core, usually small fanbase. However, there have been many exceptions that have earned fame and fortune among mainstream audiences.

Cult movies transcend their original cult status and become recognized as classics; others are of the "so bad it's good" type and remain in obscurity. Cult films often become the source of a thriving, obsessive, and elaborate subculture of fandom, hence the analogy to cults. However, not every film with a devoted fanbase is necessarily a cult film. Usually, cult films have limited but very special appeal. Cult films are often eccentric, and don't follow traditional standards of mainstream cinema, usually exploring topics not considered mainstream. Many are often considered controversial because they step outside standard narrative and technical conventions.

The movie Office Space (1999), managed to turn a large profit when word-of-mouth made it a popular video rental. Harold and Maude (1971) also wasn't successful financially at the time of its original release, but earned a cult following after its video and DVD releases. This has also happened with The Big Lebowski (1998) and many cult films and independent films. Carnival of Souls (1962), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Pink Flamingos (1972), Eraserhead (1977), Basket Case (1982), The Evil Dead (1981) and its sequels, along with Napoleon Dynamite (2004) are all considered cult cinema. FilmFetish.com creator Rene Carson coined the term Cult Cinema Icons, which relates to cult films that stand out as both commercially successful (even if not in their original theatrical release) and have managed to maintain their cult status.
